Chery Arrizo 5 GT

2026-09-29 16:40:00

The Chery Arrizo 5 GT serves as the "performance branch" of the Arrizo 5 family under Chery. First debuting in September 2022, the lineup was updated in March 2023 with the introduction of a 1.5T version, emphasising a sporty flair and its positioning as a "new people's family sedan". Currently, the model range spans between RM79,900 and RM109,900, offering two powertrain options – 1.5T+CVT and 1.6T+7DCT – produced in limited batches.

Model Overview

Positioned as a "RM70,000-class quality family sedan", the Arrizo 5 GT is a sporty sedan launched by Chery targeting mass-market buyers and Gen-Z drivers. Key selling points include standard Matrix LED headlamps across the range, a 20.5-inch dual-screen setup, front and rear parking sensors, and Level 2+ intelligent driving assistance, alongside two distinct powertrain options. The 2023 lineup comprises four variants with official prices ranging from RM79,900 to RM109,900; the 1.6T variant is supplied on a limited/build-to-order basis requiring bookings at select dealerships, while the 1.5T CVT version omits features such as the spare tyre to comply with China 6b RDE emission regulations.

Design Language

The Arrizo 5 GT adopts an aggressive "X"-shaped front grille with a black honeycomb mesh, paired with Matrix LED headlamps (with sequential turn signals) and red "GT" badging. The front fascia takes inspiration from a spindle-style motif while carrying distinct details. Along the side profile, it retains the Arrizo 5 family's upward-sloping dual character lines, complemented by 17-inch dual five-spoke smoked alloy wheels and orange fixed dual-piston brake calipers.

At the rear, it sports a full-width smoked taillight trim strip and quad exhaust tips (decorative only). Body dimensions measure 4,710 mm in length, 1,829 mm in width, and 1,490 mm in height, with a 2,670 mm wheelbase and a 570-litre boot capacity. The cabin highlights a 20.5-inch dual-screen layout (10.25-inch digital instrument cluster + 10.25-inch central infotainment screen), full-width air-con vents with orange accents, and an electronic gear selector.

Powertrain and Performance

The Arrizo 5 GT comes with two powertrain options offering distinctly different driving characteristics:

1.5T Variant: Powered by the SQRE4T15C engine delivering 115 kW (156 PS) and 230 Nm of torque, paired with a CVT with 9 virtual ratios. It delivers a WLTC fuel consumption figure of 7.1 L/100 km, prioritising smoothness and fuel economy.

1.6T Variant: Powered by the Kunpeng Power 1.6TGDI unit (SQRF4J16) pushing out 145 kW (197 PS) and 290 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). WLTC fuel consumption is rated at 6.6 L/100 km. While official 0-100 km/h acceleration figures are not published, performance is noticeably punchier than the 1.5T. It also features a dedicated GT BOOST drive mode for sharper throttle response.

Chassis and Handling

The entire range features a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout with front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam suspension, a mainstream setup in this segment. Except for the 1.5T base model (Xiang variant) which rides on 205/55 R16 tyres, all variants are fitted with 17-inch tyres (205/50 R17). Steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, braking is managed by front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, and an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) is standard across the board.

Cabin and Features

The Lion Cloud infotainment system is standard across all variants, supporting Apple CarPlay, CarLife smartphone connectivity, AutoNavi navigation, 4G connectivity, and voice control. Specifications vary across variants:

  • 1.5T Ku / Xiang Variants: Cruise control, reverse camera, 4-speaker sound system, manual air conditioning

  • 1.5T Zhi / 1.6T Chi Variants: 360-degree surround-view camera, 6-speaker sound system, automatic climate control

  • 1.6T High-Spec Variant: Level 2+ driver assistance (including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)) along with heated front seats

Safety and Driver Assistance

Standard safety kit across the lineup includes front dual airbags, front side airbags, and front/rear curtain airbags (6 airbags in total). The body shell incorporates six hot-stamped ultra-high-strength steel members in critical structural zones, achieving a C-NCAP five-star safety rating. The top-spec 1.6T variant adds a Level 2+ driver assistance suite, featuring full-speed adaptive cruise control and AEB covering varied driving scenarios. Select variants are also equipped with an Air Quality System (AQS) with negative-ion air purification.

Market Performance and Verdict

The Arrizo 5 GT has delivered modest market numbers since its debut. Launching in September 2022 amidst fierce rivalry against contenders like the GAC Empow and Changan UNI-V, its sporty positioning failed to translate into sustained sales volume. The March 2023 facelift introduced the 1.5T variant, lowering the entry price from RM99,900 to RM79,900 to boost value appeal, though market buzz was largely cannibalised by its stablemate, the Arrizo 8.

Value Highlights: Premium features rarely seen on joint-venture rivals at this price point, including Matrix LED headlamps, dual-screen display, 6 airbags, and Level 2+ ADAS; the 1.6T's 197 PS output provides a clear performance edge over rival 1.5T engines, although real-world urban fuel consumption is somewhat high (around 8-9 L/100 km) and transmission response remains average.

Overall Verdict: The Arrizo 5 GT stands out as one of the most compelling sporty sedans on the market in combining a low entry price with generous specifications. It suits pragmatic buyers on a budget who want high equipment levels and strong powertrain figures without fussing over minor year-model differences. Buyers seeking daily comfort can opt for the well-equipped 1.5T flagship (RM99,900), while those prioritising brisk performance should head straight for the 1.6T version.
